Why the Deaf?

In much of the world, the deaf are rejected by society. They are denied even the most basic education, leaving them unable to communicate, unable to find employment, and unable to care for themselves. Their minds have been neither sharpened nor expanded. They are ignorant of basic hygiene and receive little or no medical care. Many are shunned by their families and are socially, emotionally, and financially dependent on the mercy of some caring person. All too frequently, these injustices lead to a life of alcoholism, prostitution, despair and destitution.

We treat our ability to communicate, our education, and our work as a necessity and a universal right. Why should the deaf be left in such a disheartening and desperate state?

Around the world, 70 million deaf people are using their imagination to fill their silent world. They may not be able to hear their mother say, "I love you" or hear the first birds announcing spring's arrival, but they have learned to survive in their silent world. Tragically, their imagination, their resilience, and even their determination are not enough to pierce the barrier of spiritual ignorance.

God loved us and died for us while we were still sinners. Before we even cared that he existed, God pursued us with unquenchable love. Around the world today, from the Bible belt of America to the atheism of Asian nations, from the dreamy islands of the Bahamas to the barren tundras of Siberia, 70 million deaf are still unaware of God's pursuit of them. Their ignorance, just like ours, will never convince God to abandon them. Many live around the corner from Bible believing churches, but without translators and education they remain as unreached as the deaf in North Korea.  Will you join God as he pursues the deaf?
