The Church
School Model
Reaching the deaf for Christ through schools run by national churches.
This model is the most effective way of reaching the
largest number of deaf with the Gospel.
ICCD
will seek national evangelical churches who are willing
to establish a deaf school in their facilities, which are usually vacant during the week. At the pastors’ invitation, we
will decide which church is best suited to house a school.
We will use and evaluate two methods of establishing a Church School.
In the first church, ICCD’s team will be the first teachers
of the deaf and will simultaneously train local believers in sign language.
These believers will replace the missionaries as full-time teachers to the deaf.
ICCD will provide the curriculum, annual teacher training, and encouragement.
In the second church, ICCD’s missionary team will not go to
a church to help them establish their school. Instead, the team will train two
potential teachers from this church school at the first church school. Once
trained, the teachers will return to their church to start the school. This
method may give the church a greater sense of independence.
In both methods that we are evaluating, we are not there to
own and operate the school. Our purpose is to encourage, facilitate, and train, and
to be a resource to the church for their school operation.
The sign language classes will be open to both hearing and
deaf adults. This training will provide adequate sign vocabulary to present the
Gospel.
One of the big benefits of the Church School
model is that it trains nationals to reach nationals. Since the local church
provides the facilities and the teachers, they partner in ownership.
Church Schools allow a large number of the national church’s members to get
involved.
The Church
School model is a
relatively inexpensive means of reaching the deaf. Once our team has
established a Church
School, they will
relocate and begin again. The national teachers will also move to other areas to
start more Church Schools, especially within their denomination. This method
allows for rapid expansion, reaching more deaf for Christ.
The Church
School model is the most
effective means of fulfilling our vision where the deaf don’t already know sign language.
While few countries have many educated deaf, they may have
some secular deaf schools. These schools provide an excellent ministry
opportunity - using the Secular Deaf School Model.
